Getting prepared for your portrait session

Portrait Session Tips

Clothes

Keep it simple
At least 3 changes of clothes to have a choice
No patterns
Logos can be distracting although large graphics can look good for individual portraits.
Families tend to look best in similar colours, least distracting – attention goes to faces rather than clothes.
Best to not go sleeveless unless its a spagetti strap dress – sleeveless blouses and shirts tend to make people look heavy in photos.
The best neckline is up around the neck – crew neck or turtleneck work wonders.

Shoes & Accessories

Have a selection of shoes to match your outfits
Accessories look great – jewelry, belts, hats, etc

Hair & Makeup

Hair should be the way you normality wear it, although best to wear it down when you arrive and we can put it up as we shoot.
Make up should be normal and not too heavy.

Tanning

Its best not to get a tan before your shoot – tends to make skin look dirty. Don’t “hide” from the sun, but also don’t go tanning.

Personalize your Session

If you are active in a particular sport or activity you should include something that reflects that, ie skis, footballs, guitars, etc.

Babies and Young Children

Bring favourite toys and books, it will show their playtime.
Remember that it is the photographer’s job to get a response from the child and any activity by you when not called upon by the photographer can confuse the child and you may miss the ideal shot. If you’re in a family portrait, let the photographer get the response from the child – your job is to look good for the camera.

Most of all . . . Enjoy it.
